Spitsbergen – as far north as you will get.
The archipelago of Spitsbergen, 1300 km from the North Pole, was discovered by William Barents in 1596. The Norwegian name, Svalbard is mentioned as early as in 1194 in Icelandic documents. The Svalbard treaty of 1920 gave Norway sovereignty over this 63000 km2 large group of islands.
Spitsbergen is the northern most part of Norway and offers some unique and unrivalled nature experiences. We may stay at a base camp made out of driftwood or on a ship which is purposely frozen into the ice every winter to serve as rustic accommodation. Snow scooters and dog sledges are used to venture into the islands and to get around. Experienced and special trained guides are with us at all times, enlightening us on what we see and experience, making sure the ice bears do not get to close, and that we leave nothing but footprints in this exceptional virgin and vulnerable nature paradise.
